Real money is now flowing through the WOOOBA Wallet, and July proves the loop end-to-end. Our UK Revolut merchant account settled 53 card payments worth £644.16 gross with zero failures, refunds or chargebacks. WOOOBA recognises revenue from three fee pots, each 100% margin with no cost of sale attached. The engine is the Game Fee Pot: every player appearance in a fee-bearing game moves £0.50 in — 215 micro-fees in July, £107.50, taking the pot to £543.77 by Jul 31. The TopUp and CashOut pots take small fees at the wallet's edges — top-ups carry a £0.50 fee (plus 1% above £20), and with July's average card payment at £12.15 the typical top-up fee lands at £0.50 flat. The TopUp Fee Pot has accumulated £134.36 to date, while cash-out activity stays deliberately minimal (one fee in July) because players keep balances in the wallet and spend them on games, exactly the behaviour we want. Together the three pots hold £691.13 of accumulated 100%-margin fee income. The unit economics are live: 215 micro-fees implies roughly 18 fee-bearing game sessions at our ~12-players-per-game model — repeat games created earlier keep running and keep paying, which is exactly the engine the 5-year forecast scales to millions.

Engagement is healthy for a community this early: active users average ~4.8 minutes of engagement per day across ~1.6 engaged sessions. The most-viewed screen by far is game search (1,488 views — more than double any other screen), followed by game previews and profiles — players open WOOOBA to find a game, exactly the behaviour the model needs. Adoption of v2.4.8 ramped within days of the late-July rollout, and the user base skews UK (96 actives) and US (43), with early signals from 22 more countries. Week-1 retention across July cohorts averages ~18% — our top focus area as Live Games beds in.
Product
WOOOBA v2.4.8 shipped July 27. Players can now join live games in progress and accept live game invitations directly — closing the loop between "a game is happening" and "I'm on my way." Game descriptions were expanded to 4,000 characters with a clean read-more layout, so Captains can set expectations (format, skill level, fees, house rules) before anyone shows up. Plus the usual round of fixes.
And as this update goes out (Aug 12), v2.4.9 (build 3) just shipped to the App Store. Game organisers can now choose open joining — players join instantly without a request, a feature our users asked for directly — alongside a full approval-required flow across Game Listing, Game Details and game creation, so every Captain picks the trust level that fits their run. The release also fixes Game Preview pagination and data reloads, and completes a migration of our iOS dependencies to Swift Package Manager — a tech-debt cleanup that makes every future release faster and safer to ship.
Under the hood, the platform already supports repeat game scheduling, map-based court & pitch discovery, in-game group chat, player verification to cut no-shows — and wheelchair basketball games, because grassroots means everyone.
How WOOOBA makes money — the Captains flywheel
1
Captains create games
Organisers set up fee-bearing pickup games (~12 paying players, avg. $8 game fee).
2
Players pay in-app
WOOOBA Wallet collects the fee; WOOOBA keeps a ~$0.50 micro-fee per player per game.
3
Captains get paid
Payouts flow to organisers via fintech APIs — WOOOBA pays the grassroots, not the other way round.
4
PremiumPlayer subs (coming soon)
$4/month subscription — not yet launched — will add active organisers to a cash-reward program that motivates more games.
The long-term model
Our bottom-up 5-year model covers soccer & basketball in the USA, UK and EU only — a confirmed playing population of 152 million (sources: NBA, FIFA, FIBA, Sport England). Reaching ~11% weekly active penetration by Year 5 yields:

Why WOOOBA is different
We pay the grassroots. Most sports apps monetise players; WOOOBA routes money to the organisers who make games happen.
Sport-native social. Feeds are sport-specific — hoopers see hoops, footballers see football. No noise.
Verified players, fewer no-shows. Player verification and profiles make casual games actually happen.
Everyone plays. Wheelchair basketball is supported in-app — inclusion is a feature, not a footnote.
Backed by the best in football. Richard Scudamore, former Executive Chairman of the English Premier League, is an angel investor.
20 years of insight. Founder Daniel Lane has been organising pickup ball across the US and UK since the idea was born on English courts.
Payments ran flawlessly — 53 of 53 card transactions settled, with zero failures, refunds or chargebacks.
100% crash-free users across iOS and Android, every day of the month.
CMO joined the team — bringing a 150-player weekly basketball community with him, plus a playbook for putting brands inside WOOOBA-style pickup games.
Dev velocity leap: our CTO built the "WOOOBA AI Brain" and "Foundry" — AI-assisted coding plus automated Jira stories & UI design across web, iOS and Android. Every future release ships faster.
Web team doubled — two part-time web developers joined, and we've built a bespoke site for SoccerMates (launching now): the bridge to onboarding its 8,500 Meetup soccer players into WOOOBA.
What we're working through
Runway. £14k in the bank is ~3 months at forward burn. We're closing our angel round now — it's priority one, and the traction above is the case for it.
Week-1 retention (~18%). Live Games and open joining are August's retention bets — both cut the friction between finding a game and playing in it.
AWS at full price. Our credits have expired, adding ~£1,500/month from August — already reflected in the forward burn above.
Android & web trail iOS by ~3 months. We can't yet fund the team full-time — closing the round fixes this directly (and the AI Brain shrinks the gap in the meantime).
Key people need the round to close. A sustainable founder retainer is £4k/month; our lead iOS developer — essential to the build — needs £2k/month from September to stay; and our CTO goes full-time once ~£200k is banked, covering a year of his £120k retainer. This is precisely what the raise unlocks.
The road ahead
Bristol Sport basketball community onboards in September — an estimated 500 weekly paying players by December. At our £0.50 micro-fee, that alone is ~£1,000+/month of run-rate fee revenue, roughly 8x July's.
Reading Rockets doubling down — 2x the games and court locations by October.
"Groups" lands in ~8 weeks — our answer to Meetup.com — alongside Group Membership and organiser Subscriptions: monthly packages of games, sold by Captains, collected by the Wallet. The timing is kind: Meetup+ membership now runs $14.99/month — with group member dues still charged on top — and running a group costs up to $55/month. WOOOBA is free to join and free to organise on; we take only a £0.50 fee when a player pays to play.
The Meetup migration: SoccerMates' 8,500 soccer players come first; we've identified several more post-World Cup Meetup soccer groups at up to 20,000 players each. And once Groups is live, we'll revisit US Youth Soccer and its 3 million members aged 13–19.
USA pipeline: pitching the AAU on WOOOBA Wallet. With nearly 800,000 registered members and an estimated 15,000–25,000 basketball games every week (roughly 100,000 a month) across the USA, the AAU still collects game fees manually — largely over Venmo. WOOOBA automates exactly that. We're also pursuing an NBA revenue-share deal, negotiating higher up the chain of command.
How you can help
Help us close the round. We're raising now, and with ~3 months of runway, this month's introductions matter most. If you know an angel or fund that backs sport, community or fintech — one email from you moves faster than ten from us.
Every number above is the same mission compounding: codifying the analogue ecosystem of grassroots basketball and soccer — making both sports more accessible, fun, rewarding and engaging for everyone who plays. Thank you for backing it. Questions, ideas, or a game you want organised — reply any time.
